Parental Control
Proper Internet etiquette begins in the
home. Online predators and child pornography are so well known in
today's society that every parent should be familiar with, if not
thoroughly informed about the topic. Parents must teach children about
internet safety.
A few important rules for parents to implement regarding Internet Safety:
-Teach your children not to give out any personal
information including their names, addresses, phone numbers and even
school information.
-Disallow or very closely supervise the use of chat rooms.
-Limit your child's Instant Messaging capabilities
to a parental approved buddy list. Also, regularly check their buddy
list to make sure it has not been altered.
-Place your computer in an area of your home where
you can easily supervise your child's internet activity. This rule must
be followed especially if a webcam is attached to the computer.
-Know your kids' online activities and friends by periodically asking about them.
-Use parental controls or monitoring technology which block access to dangerous sites and activities.
-Establish a set of online rules and an agreement
with your child about their Internet use both at home and outside of it
such as at school or at a friend's house.
-Monitor the amount of time your child spends on the Internet.
-Instruct your child never to plan a face-to-face meeting with someone that they have met online.
