According to Merriam-Webster
Online Dictionary, a "predator" is defined as "one that
preys, destroys, or devours." The precursor word "online" is defined as
"connected to, served by or available through a system and
especially a computer or telecommunications system (as the Internet)."
The two terms combined was made popular by a Dateline NBC
special entitled To Catch a
Predator which performed and nationally
televised undercover stings on men and women who sexually preyed on
young children. For the first time, a bright and disturbing light was
shed on the horrifying truths that the Internet and its freely
distributed freedom kept secret from families all over the United
States. Below is an excerpt from an episode showing an uneasy
older gentleman being confronted by the show's host.
