Program of Study Rationale:

I believe this program of study shapes my area of concentration so it meets all my interests. My research interests lie in the area of assistive technology (AT). The population I am interested in the most are students with learning disabilities (LD) at the elementary school level. I have received my Master’s Degree in LD and worked with the students with LD so I think I am familiar enough with the subject to make it my minor. Since there is little differentiation between assistive and instructional technology (IT) at elementary school level, I feel like it will be highly beneficial for me to take courses both in assistive and instructional technology and have them as a double major. My goal after completing this Ph.D. program is to work in higher education, introducing more teachers and other professionals working with children with disabilities to the AT and IT options available. Curriculum development is an essential part of higher education. That is why I am also interested in taking classes in instructional design and human/computer interfaces. In addition, I am also fascinated with the topic of Universal Design and how it works with the population I am interested in. I am looking forward to learning about instructional design process and trying to find and introduce the ways for instructional methods to employ principles of universal design. Technology can play a critical role in providing Universal Design and designing instruction for students with different needs. So I feel like all these courses really blend together greatly to meet my needs and interests.
