Volleyball Downed by Loyola-Chicago
By Audrey Christopher Broadside Staff Writer
Still looking for its first win of the season, the George
Mason University men’s volleyball team took two disappointing
losses this weekend in the Golden Dome Classic at
Rutgers-Newark.
While their overall record sits at 0-5, the team has not
competed in any conference level matches, keeping the slate
open for an Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association
tournament bid.
The Patriots played Loyola-Chicago Friday night, losing in
a 4-set game 30-19, 30-13, 25-30 and 30-24. Mason struggled
with a .080 hitting percentage, compared to Loyola-Chicago’s
.312 hitting percentage.
The Ramblers overpowered the Patriots in kills, dealing out
65 overall to Mason’s meager 33.
Four players for the Ramblers put in 13 or more kills,
topping the amount that any single Patriots player gave.
Middle blocker Matt Steinfurth led Mason with 12 kills.
Saturday, Steinfurth continued his strong performance
against the Findlay Oilers, contributing 16 kills. Findlay
held strong, taking the win 30-27, 30-23, 29-31 and 30-28.
Steinfurth’s performance awarded him a place on the
All-Tournament Team at the Golden Dome Classic. Outside hitter
Felix Campos added 16 kills, but came out with 14 errors on 51
attacks.
The Oiler’s power trio of David Franklin, Jim Dziczkowski
and Jeff Overfield could not be shut down, taking their team
to the win. Franklin supplied 16 kills, Overfield gave 12
kills and Dziczkowski led the team with a game-high 25 kills.
Mason returns to the court Feb. 14, when they battle it out
at Springfield, Mass. Springfield College is ranked No. 1 in
the country among Division III programs and holds a 2-2
record.
