FTP via MS Windows to upload or download binary files, graphics  and text files
or plain text files  (".txt," ".doc," ".wpd," ".xls")
from your PC to your Mason account and vice versa
not elegant, but it works

For an elegant, graphical way to upload and download files, use WSftp (PC) [WSftp instructions] or Fetch (MAC)

To upload (put) a file into your mason account from your home PC:

Be sure your file names have no spaces  or slashes  ("/").  The mason server does not recognize such file names with  spaces.

1. Click on the Start button (bottom of Windows screen), then click on Run.

2. Type ftp in the text box after the "Open:" prompt.  Click the OK button. The "ftp>" prompt will appear.

["FTP" stands for  File Transfer Protocol, a format used when transferring files from one computer to another.]

3. At the ftp> prompt, type open mason.gmu.edu and press ENTER.

4. Type your login name [wo. the extension] after the "User:" prompt and press ENTER.

5. Type your mason password after the "Password:" prompt and press ENTER.

6. At the "ftp>" prompt, type lcd a:\   OR   lcd c:\  [or whatever drive your file is on]
Be sure you leave a space between the lcd and the drive letter.  Press ENTER.

7. Type binary after the "ftp>" prompt.  Press ENTER.
[The binary code assures that the file will be transferred with formatting intact.]

8. Type put filename.ext (Substitute your file name, including the extension, for "filename.ext".) Press ENTER.

9. When finished, type quit at the "ftp>" prompt . Press ENTER to exit .

To Attach a File (residing in your mason/osf1.gmu.edu> home directory) to an e-mail message, scroll down to the
Attachment portion of the pine message header. Type in the name of the file residing in your home directory. If you
don't remember the name of the file, select ^J, then ^ T. You will be sent to your home directory where you can
scroll to the correct file, and press Enter. (You can only do this if the file was exported to your mason directory
from an email or if it was uploaded ("put" or "ftp-ed") into your mason directory. )

To download a file from your mason account to your home PC:

Use the steps above, but in # 8, type get filename.ext instead of put filename.txt
(Substitute your file name, including the extension, for "filename.ext".

I recommend using the lcd a:\ option so it will be easier to find your file.

Press ENTER, then quit as above.
