Implementing Technology
to Support Privacy Policy

Dr. Alan Harbitter is a Distinguished Professor of Information Technology and Engineering in the Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering.  He earned his PhD at Mason in 2001 while co-founding PEC Solutions, a publicly-owned information technology services company.  His business and academic activities have focused on information security, especially privacy and identity management.  In prior lectures in this series, he presented his contributions to a framework for secure nationwide information sharing in the Justice community.  His current work, and the subject of this lecture, concerns application of technology to implement privacy policy.  There has been considerable progress made in developing privacy policies to govern the operation of information systems, but much less progress in developing supportive technology to implement these complex polices.  In this lecture he will describe national‑scale pilot programs that apply technology to help protect privacy, and outline the future research required to expand the scope of this work to fully protect privacy.
