Secure
Information Sharing:
The Killer App for Identity
Management
Ever since the tragic events of 9/11, secure information sharing has become a national priority. Identity management is a prerequisite to secure information sharing. The first thing that we want to know about parties we are sharing information with is who they are, and what privileges they have by nature of their identities. Fortunately, there are a lot of new technologies, standards, and products to help answer these basic questions. However, there is work that government agencies have to take on in developing domain-specific standards before identity management can be used effectively as a means to securely share information.
In this third annual update on secure information sharing, Dr. Harbitter will describe two projects that are using federated identify management to facilitate information sharing, one for the Canadian Province of British Columbia and the other sponsored by the Department of Justice. Dr. Harbitter will provide background on the problem space, describe the different approaches used in these two projects, and explain how privacy concerns can be addressed.
