Psychotherapy Services
Psychotherapy services at the George Mason University
Center for Psychological Services (formerly the Psychological Clinic) are provided
by graduate students in the clinical psychology doctoral program
under the supervision of a qualified psychology professional, or by
residents in clinical psychology. A resident is an individual who
has completed a doctorate, but is not yet licensed. All residents in
psychology provide services under the supervision of a licensed clinical
psychologist. To
facilitate training, and to ensure that psychotherapy clients receive the
best possible service, sessions may be audio taped or video taped.
Tapes are for the supervision of the provider only and are not considered
a part of the client record. All services are confidential unless
specifically restricted by state or federal law.
Psychotherapy services by graduate students are offered on a sliding fee scale
based upon individual or family income. Payment in full is
expected at the time that service is rendered.
The Center does require payment in full for missed appointments or
appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice. The Center
does not accept insurance reimbursement. However, your
psychotherapist is able to provide you with a receipt if you would like to
seek reimbursement from your insurance company or other health benefit
plan. The Center offers individual, couples, and family
psychotherapy services on a regular basis. Periodically psychotherapy
groups are offered. The clinical doctoral training program at George
Mason University emphasizes a social and community model where individual
functioning is considered within a social context. Training and
supervision also consider the unique cultural identity of the client.
The specific therapeutic approach used by an individual provider varies with
the client's unique needs and treatment goals, the provider's training, and
the experience of the supervisor. Providers and supervisors use research on
the usefulness of specific types of interventions to reduce symptoms of
distress or problem behaviors. Interventions also often focus on
reducing stress, adjusting to life transitions, and improving life
satisfaction and happiness. Cognitive-Behavioral interventions are available.
The Center for Psychological Services does not provide medication services. Your
provider can work with you to help you to obtain a medication consult in the community,
and would work with you and your prescribing physician or nurse practitioner
to provide comprehensive care.
