As you watch The Wizard of Oz listen/look for answers to the following questions.  Some of the questions have specific, concrete answers from the film, others ask for your opinion or interpretation.

Answers are due Tuesday, November 2, 2010 by class time. 

1.   What is the name of the first woman Dorothy meets in Oz?

2.    Who are the little people Dorothy meets?

3.    What is the name of the witch dressed in black?

4.    Why is she mad?

5.    What does she want from Dorothy?

6.    How will Dorothy get home?

7.    What does the Scarecrow want?

8.    What does the TInman want?

9.    What does the Lion want?

10.  What happens when the friends walk into the poppies?

11.  How do the friends get into the Emerald City?

12.  Who gives the message "Surrender Dorothy" and how?

13.  The Wizard of Oz says that the friends must bring him something before he will help them.  What must they bring the wizard?

14.  Who are the Winkies?

15.  Who kills the wicked witch and how?

16.  How does Dorothy get back to Kansas?

17.  After Dorothy gets back to Kansas, how do the adults treat her?

18.  How did the "framing" of the Oz story with the Kansas scenes at the beginning and end of the movie affect the movie?  In the book, these "before and after" Kansas scenes do not happen.  Why did the movie makers choose to add them?

19.  From where did the wizard get his power?  Was this real power or not? Give evidence from the film to support your answer.

20. Were the scarecrow, tinman and lion really "better" after the Wizard gave them awards?  What message does the movie teach about awards?

21. Why couldn't Dorothy use the Ruby Slippers to get home earlier in the movie?

22. What does this film tell you about how to get what is important to you in life?

23. If Dorothy had not "traveled" to Oz (by tornado or dream), would she have learned this lesson?
