Paper #3
For Tue, October 3rd, Write a 4-5 page paper (typed and double spaced) in which you take a position on whether Scarface should have been censored. Discuss at least two changes made to the movie in response to the censors and explain why you think the alterations improve or harm the film. Include a discussion of the relevant background material covered in Black and a detailed analysis of individual scenes (from the film and scripts) as you develop and support your thesis. You can incorporate material you have already written but you will need to revise it based on my comments and the suggestions from student editors. You will also have to revise or add sections to set up the new historical material.
I will evaluate the paper in terms of how well it uses (and properly cites) historical material from Black and how consistent and detailed you are in developing and supporting your thesis. In addition, I will look for how well you correct problems identified in earlier papers. Cite specific page numbers in the works you refer to and provide reasons and evidence for your claims. Follow the MLA documentation guidelines in Hacker (you can also use the APA or Chicago format, depending on your major) and include in-text citations and a works cited or reference page. As we discussed in class, a thesis is more than a topic; it's a position you take on an issue or the answer you give to a question you have asked. The material you put together in your groups on the Hays' Code is available as follows:
You will exchange papers in class and fill out a paper editing sheet so make sure you bring a print copy of your paper to class as well as a blank editing sheet . Also send your paper to yourself and put the message in your Mason Topics folder. And don't forget to number your pages, put your name on your paper as well as a title, and staple your pages so they won't get out of order.
Remember that you are also handing in your portfolio of the writing you have done since Sept 19th. Organize your portfolio in chronological order with the earliest assignments first. Attach editing sheets to papers and staple pages together for each assignment. Also make sure you put titles or headings on each assignment. The material you should include at includes: Your position paper of Sept 21st and associated editing sheets (make sure your copy has my comments); your notes on the reading in Black (3-46, 151-154, and 302-308).
