HW #1     Due:  Friday, January 28, 2005
1.  At the bookstore:  Buy the textbook:  Essential Idioms in English and a small spiral notebook or 3x5 cards for vocabulary. Bring both to class Friday, but DO NOT WRITE IN THE BOOK AND SAVE YOUR RECEIPT.

2.  In your core or elective class or when you watch television, listen to the radio, talk with friends (in English, that is!) listen for words you do not know.  If possible, get a friend to write them down for you (for correct spelling).  This is ORAL vocabulary, not words you read in the newspaper or books.  You may see word in television commercials, but try to get words that you HEAR.

3.  Write your name on the outside of the notebook; individual notecards not acceptable unless fastened together with ring.
4.  Write the date and number the words consecutively (i.e. start week 2 with #11 , not #1)
5. Write down 10 – 12 new words in your spiral notebook.  For each word you should write:
     a. part of speech (is it a verb, noun, adjective or adverb?)
     b. source:  (where did you hear it? on tv? name of program or commercial; friend?  teacher?  movie?)
     c.  definition:  what does it mean?
     d.  an original sentence (your own sentence; not one from the dictionary) with the word underlined.  (You may do this
           on a separate sheet of paper if you prefer).

6.    For example: January 28th
          1. aggressive                                     source:  TV: NFL football game
              adjective; aggression, noun;
              def:  ready to quarrel or attack; threatening
S: He’s a very aggressive player and goes after the ball on every play.

7.  Grading Criteria:

 a.  Accuracy; i.e. the correct meaning as word is used
 b. Usefulness of words (i.e. words we hear, not from newspaper!)
 c. Completeness: i.e. part of speech, specific source, date
 d.  Original sentence (not sentence from the dictionary).
 e.  Neatness and legibility
 f.  Following instructions; i.e. spiral notebook so that words may be added
  and reviewed throughout the semester.  Separate 3x5 cards are acceptable
  only if secured together.

    Write 10 questions that are appropriate for getting acquainted with someone.  Inquire (i.e. ask) about their
    major, their country, family, pets, hobbies, favorites, goals, opinions... but don't ask questions that Americans
    consider too personal, such as their age, marital status, political or religious opinions.
 

Oral Presentation 1:  Tuesday, Feb. 1:  Report on someone you met at the reception (or elsewhere).  What did you

Be sure to tell us the topic of the interview; who you met and their thoughts.  Grade based on
preparation; content (interesting?); delivery and eye contact.

HI OCS 32  Oral Presentation Practice   Due:  Tues 9/7/04

1. At the ELI welcome reception (or anytime before/after ELI classes) talk with an ELI student that you do not know and who is NOT in  HI OCS.  Get acquainted and find out their name, country, family (how many siblings), living situation in VA (apartment, dorm, condo, single family house, or townhouse; live alone, with family, with relatives, with friends, etc), favorites (sports, shopping, reading, movies, music etc).  Try to ask followup questions to be more specific.  For example, which sports?  what kind of music? travel where? Try to find out as many details as possible.

2.  Prepare a 1-minute talk to introduce this new acquaintance to the OCS class.  Tell us his/her name, country, living situation, interests, favorites (movie, actors, music, sports, famous people, books, restaurant, etc.)  Provide as many details as you can in one minute.

3.  Do not write out what you want to say, but you may make notes with key words on it to remind you of the main points. Do not write out a manuscript, but just tell us, as you would tell a friend.  This is an informal talk, not a formal presentation.

4. When you stand in front of our class, try to look at us – and have some eye contact with everyone in the class.  This is not a graded talk, just practice speaking in front of a group.
 
 

HI OCS HW #3  Teach Vocabulary 1                       Due: Tues. 9/7/04

1.  Make sure you know how to correctly pronounce your word.
2.  Note its various forms: adj. noun, verb, adverb (i.e. happy; happiness; happily)
3.  Find a picture which illustrates your word.
4.  Write a sentence using your word.
5.  Prepared to teach your word to the class by putting this information on a sheet or sheets of paper to make it clearly visible to all.
