Text and Materials:

Quest 1 Reading and Writing by Hartmann and Blass

 

Description:

            1) writing skills and grammar

                        review and add verb tenses

                        recognize and use modals, gerunds and infinitives

                        recognize and use compound and complex sentences and clauses

                       

            2) reading skills and vocabulary

                        to recognized main ideas and supporting details

                        to predict reading content

                        to individually read an entire book

                        to learning skimming and scanning

                        to increase vocabulary

Objectives:  By the end of this class you should be able to:

            write complex sentences with correct sentence structure, verb tenses and                                           punctuation

            write an organized composition with main idea and supporting details

            read for enjoyment, skim, scan and understand main ideas

            understand and be able to use new vocabulary both in writing and orally

            feel more confident about speaking and listening English outside the classroom

           

Course Requirements:

            daily reading and writing assignments

            oral presentations

            role plays

            LDC assignments (Language Development Center)

            independent reading/reporting on a novel

            participation in class discussions

 

Policies:

 

1.  Attendance.  Coming to class is important; more than 7 absences in this class results in NG grade according to ELI policy.  If you are 20 minutes or more late, it will be counted as half an absence.

2.  Participation.  You will be expected to participate in small group and interactive activities as well as volunteer your ideas in class discussions and ask questions in class.

Participation will account for 10% of your final grade.

 

3.  Exams.  There will be weekly quizzes. There are no make-ups for quizzes.   Some quizzes are announced, others may be unannounced.   Quizzes and exams will account for 40% of your final grade. A midterm and final exam will each count as two quizzes.  Exams may be made up if the instructor is notified at least 24 hours before the exam. The final exams for reading and writing will be Wednesday, August 1, 2007.

 

4. Homework:  Written assignments (reading .writing, vocabulary and grammar) will account for 30% of your final grade.  If you are absent, you are still responsible for doing the assignments.  Homework is due at the beginning of the class period; late assignments may be turned in within one week of the due date, but will be one grade lower.  If you e-mail homework it must be sent before 10 a.m. on the due date.

 

5. Oral presentations: Several shorter talks will be assigned as well as a longer project presentation. Oral presentations will account for 20% of your final grade.

 

6. Plagiarism.  As a student of the ELI you may not  cheat, plagiarize, steal or lie in matters related to this class.  Copying any published or printed material without acknowledgement is a violation of GMU’s honor code.  If you turn in written work that is plagiarized from the web or other source you will receive an automatic NG for the class.  Material must be paraphrased or summarized in your own words or placed in quotation marks. 

   

7.  Midterm Conference.  One individual teacher-student conference will be held the week of  July 2, but suggestions and comments about the class are welcome at any time. 

 

8. Grading Criteria

            Daily homework assignments (written & voice mail)       30%

            Quizzes & exams(vocabulary, dictation, listening)                      40%

            Oral presentations                                                                     20%

            Attendance & participation                                                       10%
