Dr. McBride has active research in late Quaternary coastal, shelf, and estuarine geology; coastal geomorphology and processes; and coastal oceanography along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts. His research has been funded primarily by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Minerals Management Service (MMS), and he currently advises several M.S. and Ph.D. students covering topics such as “Tidal inlet geology and morphodynamics along the VA/NC Outer Banks”; “Geologic framework, geomorphology, and processes of bayhead deltas in the Chesapeake Bay”; and “Geomorphic and vegetative changes of Parramore Island, VA, using GPS, satellite, and aerial photography data.”
In addition to being on the editorial board of the international marine geology journal entitled GeoMarine Letters, Dr. McBride teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in oceanography, geomorphology, coastal morphology and processes, and environmental geology, among others. He is presently the Undergraduate Coordinator for the Geology and Earth Science degree programs at GMU. Prior to joining Mason, Dr. McBride worked at the Louisiana Geological Survey, Coastal Geology Section, in Baton Rouge, acted as a scientific consultant on the Exxon Valdez oil spill clean-up, and worked as a research associate at LSU’s Coastal Studies Institute.
