Dr. Lawrey’s research deals with ecology and population biology of lichens and other fungi. He is especially interested in the phylogeny and ecology of lichens, and is presently investigating the systematics and chemical ecology of lichenicolous fungi. He has also done research on the use of lichens and other fungi as biomonitors of atmospheric quality. This work has been funded largely by the USDA Forest Service and the National Park Service. He is currently conducting a lichen biomonitoring study for the National Park Service in various National Capital Region parks. He is author of Biology of Lichenized Fungi and over 60 other book chapters and journal articles. Dr. Lawrey teaches undergraduate courses in plant biology and evolution, and graduate courses in environmental biology and plant ecology. Before beginning his academic career, he worked briefly for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
