Tag dated 08/18/2006: a big "X" on the roof, to mark the spot, to remember that something was buried under it/

Today when we went to the business park, we almost got caught. It made me realize how strange it was that we had barely even seen another person there, much less behind the abandoned part. The place seemed supernaturally empty when we started going there, but I didn't even notice again until today. Even though we didn't actually get caught, it really could not have been a worse day.

We heard a truck coming as we were going in the back entrance, so we filed in as quickly as we could, with me entering last. I figured it would be a delivery truck, but I left the door cracked so I could peer out. Instead it was a dump truck, and it parked in one of the spaces against the fence.

Three guys in reflective vests got out and started heading toward the door. I backed up and motioned for Miri and Liam to start going down the hall fast, whispering the word "shit" a lot. When we got to the second hallway, I started going left to get to the Wishing Well, but Miri stopped.

"The roof," she said. "They'll find us if we stay in the building." I bolted back to the ladder and followed her and Liam up.

"What if they're just doing roof maintenance?" Liam said. "Then we're fucked."

Miri's intuition ended up being good, though. We went over and crouched on the side of the roof overlooking the dump truck. A little while later, the workers were carrying out debris and hurling it into the truck bed. We watched on and off for the rest of the afternoon as they brought out PVC piping, mannequins, wooden pallets, and coat-racks, throwing it into the truck bed in a way that made it all seem to hover for a moment before it landed. I remember looking up and seeing a half moon lost in the still bright blue sky.

Eventually the workers brought out a medium sized, white statue of an elephant. That was definitely the strangest thing, and even stranger because we had never seen it in there before.

"I wonder how much other weird stuff we never found in there," I whispered, but I was just trying to make conversation. I couldn't really relate to what I was watching, it seemed to happen somewhere else that just looked like the business park. Miri just kept staring at the truck, her eyes working it over, her hand gripping a can of paint tightly, shaking it slowly as if she was getting ready to use it, but quietly enough that no one would know we were there.
