Upload Your Files
To upload files to your new space, you can use any FTP /sFTP program. You can download SSH (Secure Shell) from the GMU downloads page. Mac users can use a program such as Fugu
ITU has instructions for installing and using SSH on your home machine
On the classroom computers, select SSH: Secure File Transfer from Programs in the Start menu. If you click the SSh icon, or choose SSH client, you'll get what looks like a telnet (terminal) window. Go to the Window menu and select New File Transfer
Before you upload any files (this may prevent a problem we encountered last year)
- Go to the SSH Edit menu and select Settings
- If there is a + next to Global Settings, click to expand it
- Go down to File Transfer and select Advanced
- Uncheck the box labeled Preserve original destination permissions
- Click OK to save these settings.
To connect to the remote server:
- Select Quick Connect
- Hostname: Enter mason.gmu.edu
- User Name: Enter your GMU username
- Leave the other settings on their defaults
- Click Connect
- A Host Identification message may appear. If it does, click Yes.
- An ominous UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS PROHIBITED message will appear. Don't panic: you're authorized. Click OK.
- Once you connect, you will be prompted for your password.
- Enter your Mason Cluster password
- Click OK
(On your home machine, you'll want to use the Profiles button to save your profile for one-click connections)
The two columns show local files and remote files (these are files on the Mason server). There are icons above the file lists on either side. These allow you to move up a directory level (folder with arrow), go to your home directory (house icon), create a new folder, etc.
To move files from your disk to the server:
- On the remote (right) side, double-click the public_html folder to move into the public_html directory
- On the local (left) side, navigate to your local drive (select My Computer, then your drive)
- Select the file you wish to upload
- You can drag it over to the remote side and drop it,
or
- select upload from the Operation menu, or
- select upload dialog from the Operation menu (this will prompt you for the file), or
- use the up arrow (this will prompt you for the file)
- Check the status window at the bottom of the File Transfer screen. It will indicate if the transfer was successful or not
Check your new page:
In any web browser, go to http://mason.gmu.edu/~yourusername
You will need to upload each time you make changes to or edit your pages.
If you get an error, check for common problems and solutions
