Essay 3
The third essay should be 5-7 pages (double-spaced), and should address some question pertaining to Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash.
Some possible topics are listed below (you are not limited to these topics, but I would like to know what other topics you are considering):
- The role of language as a creative force in Snow Crash: incantations and computer codes both create the things they name.
- The concept of the virus in Snow Crash: biological, cultural (which may be the same thing), digital.
- Dualism vs materialism
- Political commentary in Snow Crash: Compare the rules of the Metaverse with those of Reality.
- Economic commentary in Snow Crash: is the anarchic capitalism of the novel a utopia or a dystopia? Would you want to live in this world?
No matter what topic you choose, you will need to develop a thesis, not merely compare or state a fact. You will need to support this thesis with examples from the text (or the film). Outside sources are not required for this essay, but if they are used they must be cited using MLA style.
