The Civil War at Sea
Ingraving: USS Monitor and CSS Virginia
The following operations were performed to achieve the next image:
- Cropped
- Autocontrast
- White smoke enhanced using "Color Adjust" and lightness control
- Resized to 72 pix/inch. 75 percent of cropped size was automatic
- Prepared for web: JPEG low, optimized, and qual 20
The original engraving was abstracted by creating a main layer, a transparent layer, and a background layer and blending in a red hue, resulting in the next image.

Following operations performed:
- Image cropped to remove most of dirty border
- Background cleaned using Photoshop Elements smudge tool and brush tool. Smudge tool worked best.
- Brush tool and smudge tool used to clean up dirty lower left corner and blend with pants.
- Pencil tool used to clean up uniform and face
- Image saved for web as jpeg
The image was then colorized using Photoshop Elements brush tool and pencil tool between 40 and 60 percent opacity.
