Class Description:

Class objectives:
In this class we will produce three editions of the ELI newspaper.   Each edition will appear in print and also on the ELI website.   During the production of the newspaper, you will learn how to produce interesting, well-organized pieces of writing.   You will learn how to write attention-grabbing introductions and headlines, use source materials without plagiarizing, edit for content, organization and grammar, and meet deadlines.   All of these skills are important for writing university essays and papers and also for writing certain  sections of the TOEFL, SAT and GRE.   You will also practice oral communication skills while conducting surveys on campus and while working in small editing and revision groups in class.   Best of all, you will be improving your English language skills as you produce something that you, your classmates, other GMU students, and your family and friends can enjoy reading.

1.To write and edit short well organized and well presented pieces of writing that take into account the interest of the reader
2. To learn to meet assignment deadlines
Class Requirements: Each student will write at least one page  for each edition of the newspaper.   The page may contain one or two articles   There will be three editions of the newspaper.   Deadlines for submissions can be found by clicking on Schedule below.
Extra credit will be given for writing more articles, helping classmates, or helping with the final layout and production of the newspaper.
Homework: writing questionnaires and articles, soliciting articles and interviewing people for articles
Quizzes and Tests: Because every student is at a different linguistic and technological level, your only test is to complete a corrected final draft of your article by the deadline for each edition of the newspaper.
Class Expectations: Attendance:  Students must not miss more than 4 classes to get a passing grade.  Students missing more than 4 classes will receive an NG for the class   Arrival  more than 10 minutes late for class will be marked as a half absence.
Completion of Assignments: Students are expected to hand in all work by the deadlines even if they are absent from class.   Final drafts of articles must be handed in by the deadline in order to receive a passing grade.   Failure to haand in any final draft by the deadline will result in a NG for the class
Honor Code:  "Student members of the George Mason University community pledge not to cheat, plagiarize, steal, or lie in matters related to academic work".   http://www.gmu.edu/departments/unlife/pages/honorcode.html
Cell Phones:  Cell phones must be turned off or set to vibrate during class
If you feel your learning goals are not being met, please see me and I will do my utmost to help you achieve them.   I am always happy to spend time out of class helping students with the writing or technology requirements of this class.   I can usually be found in my office (Krug 201C) after core class or before elective classes.   Feel free to email me at any time.
