COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This elective will help you to increase your word power through thematic reading, predicting, dictionary use and practicing new vocabulary in written and spoken contexts.   You will study a wide variety of vocabulary words used in academic settings and standardized tests such as the TOEFL,
SAT and GRE.   You will also learn about basic word parts (prefixes, roots, suffixes) and word forms (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) and how these can help you figure out the meaning of new words you encounter.

<>COURSE OBJECTIVES:
You will develop strategies for learning the vocabulary that you will need at university, whatever your field of study.   You will learn a significant number of new vocabulary words from the Academic Word List.   You will become proficient in using an English dictionary.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS:

You are expected to come to class on time with all your assignments completed and to participate actively in the class.   If you are more than 10 minutes late to class on 3 occasions, you will be marked absent.  If you miss more than 3 classes, you will get NG for the class.   If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to catch up the work you have missed.   Cell phones must be turned OFF during class.

<><>GRADING CRITERIA:
The course grade will be based on:  quizzes 25%, midterm 25%, classroom activities 25%,  final exam 25%.  
Final Grades:  A=90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, NG=0-69 or more than 3 absences   Final Exams:  The final exam will take place in class on Monday the 28th of July.
